The Coffee Industry's Quiet Extinction Crisis

60% of wild coffee species are threatened with extinction, and Ethiopia holds the last wild population of Arabica on Earth. A look at the genetic crisis hiding inside every cup — and what could actually help.

Coffee is discussed constantly — origin stories, cupping scores, direct trade, price cycles. What gets discussed far less is that the plant itself, and the forests it comes from, are quietly running out of time. Wild coffee species are disappearing. So is coffee's genetic future.

The Numbers Behind the Headline

In 2019, scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew completed the first-ever comprehensive extinction-risk assessment — using International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria — of every coffee species known to science: all 124 of them. The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journals Science Advances and Global Change Biology, were unusually severe.

60% of wild coffee species are threatened with extinction — roughly three times the average extinction risk documented for plants worldwide. Of the 75 species classified as threatened, 13 are critically endangered, 40 are endangered, and 22 are vulnerable.

The species that matters most to the global industry sits inside that list. Wild Coffea arabica — the direct genetic ancestor of roughly 60% of all coffee traded worldwide — now carries a formal endangered classification. It survives naturally in exactly one ecosystem on Earth: the highland rainforests of southwest Ethiopia, with a small outlying population across the border in South Sudan.

Kew's climate modeling projects that climate pressure alone could reduce Ethiopia's wild Arabica population by 50% or more within this century.

The epicenter of this crisis is also the place coffee itself began. Ethiopia's Kafa Zone — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2010 — holds close to 5,000 distinct wild genetic varieties of Coffea arabica across roughly 760,000 hectares of highland forest.

Almost no commercial coffee is harvested from the wild. But wild populations function as the industry's genetic insurance policy — the reservoir breeders return to whenever a new pest, disease, or climate shift threatens cultivated varieties. 45% of coffee species currently have no backup in any seed bank or living collection. When a wild population disappears, whatever traits it carried disappear with it — permanently.

15 million livelihoods in Ethiopia depend on coffee, directly or indirectly. Coffee provides close to a third of the country's total export earnings. The same forests holding the genetic future of global coffee are under direct economic pressure in the present.

When the Forest Disappears, Our Options Disappear

Four pressures compound on the same landscape: climate change, new pests and diseases, loss of genetic diversity, and — ultimately — risk to coffee's future. None of these problems stand alone. They accelerate each other.

A Solution Worth Brewing: The Genetic Reserve Premium

A transparent investment model — a per-kilogram premium on direct-trade coffee verified as sourced from a recognized biosphere reserve, paid directly into a jointly administered fund for standing-forest protection and seed conservation. Not another certification logo. Public reporting on hectares protected, not vague sustainability language.
