The Goat of Kaffa

The Law of Awakening

A Founding Myth · A Literary Reflection

CAFFA Coffee Editorial·4 min read

In the beginning, there was no shepherd, nor was there a wandering hoof. There was only the Tree.

Deep within the ancient forests of Kaffa, coffee stood rooted in the silence before history, carrying within its fruit a secret older than kingdoms and older than memory itself. It waited through the passing of ages, unseen yet destined, hidden yet appointed. Humanity did not discover coffee; coffee awaited humanity.

And beside the Tree stood the Lion.

He was not its keeper by command, nor its guardian by chance. Between the Lion and the Tree existed an ancient bond woven into the fabric of creation itself. The Tree carried awakening within its fruit; the Lion embodied awakening in his presence. They were two expressions of the same enduring mystery.

For countless ages, the Lion rested beneath its branches. He watched as seasons passed and empires remained unborn. His roar guarded no territory, but a secret. His vigilance preserved the sacred center of the forest until the appointed hour should arrive.

Then the forest yielded to its first truth:

Awakening demands fire.

What seeks the light must first pass through the flame.

When the hour of revelation came, the Lion did not resist it. The bond had reached its fulfillment.

The Goat stepped forward.

Drawn by a force older than instinct, she tasted the ruby fruit and received the first shock of awakening. Her restless dance beneath the moon became the first sign that the age of slumber was ending.

Then came the one who carried it into human hands.

Not as a conqueror. Not as a discoverer. But as the vessel through which understanding would enter the human world.

He witnessed the Goat's ecstatic movement and the Lion's silent sovereignty. In that moment he recognized that he stood before something greater than himself. Gathering the fruit, he carried it to the flame.

There, the truth was fulfilled.

The fire transformed the hidden seed just as awakening transforms the hidden mind. What had slept within the fruit emerged in its highest form, and the secret that had waited through eternity entered human history.

To this day, the roasting flame repeats that first transformation.

The bean passes through fire.

The darkness deepens.

The essence awakens.

And within every cup lives the union of the Tree, the Lion, the Goat, the Shepherd, and the Flame — the five witnesses to the moment when awakening was given to humanity.

For coffee is not merely a drink.

It is the remembrance of an ancient story.

And the story remains unchanged:

Awakening demands fire.

This is the story Caffa carries forward — from the forests of Kaffa, where the Lion still watches, into every cup that bears its name.

When the cup is lifted, nothing is explained.

Everything is remembered.

The Tree. The Lion. The Goat. The Flame.

And the one who carried it into human hands.

Awakening demands fire.
